Background of the Study
School absenteeism is a pervasive challenge that directly influences academic success, particularly in Ilesa West Local Government Area. Chronic absenteeism disrupts learning continuity, hampers curriculum delivery, and contributes to lower academic performance (Adeyemi, 2023). The phenomenon is often linked to various socio-economic and health-related factors, including family instability, illness, and inadequate school infrastructure (Balogun, 2024). Research indicates that irregular attendance negatively affects students’ cognitive development and motivation, thereby widening educational disparities. Furthermore, absenteeism limits opportunities for social interaction and academic reinforcement, ultimately leading to poor examination results and reduced future prospects (Olawale, 2025). By understanding the multifaceted causes of absenteeism, this study will develop targeted recommendations to improve attendance rates and foster a supportive educational environment in Ilesa West for sustainable progress across communities.
Statement of the Problem
High rates of school absenteeism in Ilesa West are jeopardizing students’ academic success. Inconsistent attendance disrupts learning processes, resulting in poor performance and increased dropout rates (Adeyemi, 2023). The underlying causes, including socio-economic challenges and health issues, are not adequately addressed by current policies (Balogun, 2024). This persistent problem hinders effective teaching and learning, contributing to a cycle of academic underachievement. Without targeted interventions, absenteeism will continue to undermine educational outcomes and future opportunities for students (Olawale, 2025). It is imperative to identify effective strategies to reduce absenteeism and improve academic success. Immediate action is necessary to reverse trends now.
